East London Transit Phase 1a
Burns + Nice have acted as the urban designers for Transport for London’s East London Transit (ELT) scheme. The company guided the scheme from the early concept design stages to the opening of the completed scheme in May 2010.
The ELT is designed as a fully integrated public transport system that operates between Ilford Town Centre and Dagenham Dock via Barking Town Centre. The 10km long route links a series of distinct local areas, town centres, residential and employment areas. The ELT service also connects with other existing and planned transport services including Crossrail, C2C railways, London Underground and Overground and local bus services.
During concept design stage a Strategic Urban Realm Plan (SURP) was developed by Burns + Nice. The SURP places the transit route in an 800m wide study corridor. The findings of this study formed the basis for the detail design of the route corridor. Working in partnership with the affected London Boroughs and other stakeholders a holistic urban design solution was established that unifies the infrastructure needs for the transit route with wide ranging improvements to the public realm.
High quality innovative solutions at all levels of the design have led to a fully integrated public realm design. Burns + Nice coordinated all aspects of the urban realm design, including the integration of a Drivers’ Facility Building designed by Julian Cowie Architects for the new Dagenham Dock ELT Terminus. The structure was awarded with the 2010 RIBA award for its high quality architecture and substantial contribution to the local environment. The building has also been proposed for the Stephen Lawrence Prize.
