Barking Town Centre Code
Burns + Nice were commissioned to prepare a public realm design strategy for Barking, one of the key town centres in the Thames Gateway corridor. The 'Barking Code' was developed which identified materials, products, construction techniques and standard details to be used for the public spaces and streets throughout the town centre.
Four pilot projects were also developed to illustrate how to implement the design guidance in order to create a distinctive local character for Barking. An overall public realm strategy has now been prepared for the town centre, identifying and integrating all projects to be designed and implemented.
The detail design of key streets and public spaces in Barking Town Centre is now being undertaken. These include the plaza in front of the Broadway Theatre which was completed in the summer of 2005, a design for East Street including the street market and Broadway / North Street, the main link between the town centre and Abbey Green.
