Leicester City Public Realm
Burns + Nice were appointed by Leicester City Council to prepare a comprehensive public realm strategy for the city centre.
The City Council is embarking on a £19 million, 3-year public realm improvement programme which, combined with major retail and commercial investment, will transform the appearance of the city retail core. The public realm strategy will co-ordinate this programme.
Through extensive background research and public consultation a strategy was prepared to provide the general principles, options for palettes of materials and ranges of street furniture for the city centre. Outline designs for Gallowtree Gate, a key public space in the city centre, were also included as a pilot project.
Phase two will develop the full implementation strategy which will guide both the initial 3-year capital programme and further public realm improvements to be undertaken over the next 10 years.
