Honourable mention at Carrara Thermal Baths design competition

More than one thousand submissions from architecture practices and artists worldwide were submitted for the international competition to design thermal baths in the Carrara marble quarry in Tuscany, Italy.

The brief asked for a design for a series of outdoor and indoor pools and a service area. A sensitive approach to the unique man-made landscape, its morphology and scale was the subject matter of the competition.

Burns + Nice’s design response reviews a journey of self-discovery. The design focuses on the experience of the natural stone and introduces no additional materials. It also explores the relationship between the huge scale of the quarry and the individual.

The intervention is laid out as a series of pools with panoramic views, an internal gallery space within the mountain and an external pathway that expresses a fissure on the elevation of the quarry wall.

The intervention is strategically carved into the highest point of the quarry to capture panoramic views to the wider landscape.
