Transport for London

2010

Establishing a fully integrated public realm design in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders

The East London Transit (ELT) was designed as a fully integrated public transport system that operates between Ilford Town Centre and Dagenham Dock via Barking Town Centre.

The 10km long route links a series of distinct local areas, town centres, residential and employment areas. The ELT service also connects with other existing and planned transport services including C2C railways, London Underground, London Overground and local bus services. Working in partnership with the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, the London Borough of Redbridge and other stakeholders a holistic urban design solution was established providing a fully integrated public realm design.

Burns + Nice coordinated all aspects of the urban realm design, including the integration of a Drivers Facility Building designed by Julian Cowie Architects at the new Dagenham Dock Terminus. The Drivers Facility Building was awarded a 2010 RIBA Award and the overall project won the 2010 UK Bus Awards Infrastructure Award.
