Improving accessibility in Gravesend with a new Civic Square

As part of Gravesham Borough Council’s ongoing regeneration activity Burns + Nice were commissioned to develop the Gravesend Transport Quarter Masterplan which was granted planning permission in May 2010.

One objective of the master plan was the rerouting of the old town centre ring road to improve accessibility within the Town Centre. This freed the severed parts of the Civic forecourt and the Sensory Gardens from traffic and allowed them to be joined together to create a new Civic Square for Gravesend.

A common design language, high quality materials and increased accessibility link all the elements together and a bespoke water feature with 10 jets animates the centre of the square. The stainless steel grills that hold the jets are flush with the paving which allows the space to be used for events when the water is switched off. The grills also feature integrated LED lighting which makes the space attractive at night. The Square provides a major cultural opportunity for Gravesend and is seen as central to the town’s regeneration initiative, becoming a significant new public space for the community to use.
