Re-design of Newport Place in conjunction with Shaftsbury PLC’s Central Cross development in London's Chinatown

Burns + Nice were commissioned by Westminster City Council in 2016 to re-design Newport Place in conjunction with Shaftsbury PLC’s Central Cross development proposals at the eastern gateway to Chinatown.

Chinatown is a distinct area with its own intrinsic urban qualities which are different to those of nearby Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Soho. The project provides the opportunity to transform Newport Place into a new public space for Chinatown and to integrate the space with its adjacent streets. Newport Court and part of Gerrard Street were included in the square’s design approach.

A drop-in information session for the local community was held in October 2017 at the newly refurbished Newport Sandringham Building on Newport Court in Chinatown. The project was funded by Shaftesbury and aims to create a community based public space for all to enjoy in the heart of Chinatown. Works on site commenced in October 2017 and will be completed during 2018.
