Following a traffic management scheme which released a section of the highway for public realm improvements, the City of London approved the creation of this new public space in the heart of the City. The scheme includes a major water feature, new planting and seating set on three raised platforms forming a contemporary landscape design. The project won several awards including the The Worshipful Company of Paviors Award for Excellence in 2006, the Local Government News Street Design Award for Best Pedestrian Environment in 2006 and the Transport for London Award for Urban Design in 2007.
