Reinvention and reaffirmation of a primary town centre square

Queens Square was officially opened in 1958 by Queen Elizabeth II and comprised a large plaza surrounded by shops at the centre of Crawley New Town.

The current Local Plan sets out a vision for the future with a long term and high quality design solution to regenerate Queens Square and create a change in Crawley’s townscape quality. Burns + Nice proposed a scheme that aims to reactivate Queens Square by providing a hierarchy of spaces, seating areas, a large interactive water feature, high quality paving, new lighting, granite planters and tree planting. The redesign provides the opportunity for Queens Square to reinvent its identity and reaffirm its status as a primary square in the Town Centre, whilst continuing to enable and encourage events. The scheme was completed and opened in October 2017.
