Re-design of the southern churchyard of St Botolph without Aldgate

Burns + Nice were commissioned by the City of London in 2015 to re-design the southern churchyard and main entrance to the Grade I listed St Botolph’s Aldgate in conjunction with the wider scheme to create the new Aldgate Square public space which has replaced the Aldgate gyratory.

Burns + Nice were appointed lead designers working with engineers Pell Frischmann and Rupert Harris Conservation. A masterplan was developed for the southern churchyard and the area immediately abutting the Church to the east opposite the new Dorsett City hotel. The agreed scheme gained planning and Faculty approvals in 2016 and the project was completed in June 2018. The design has provided a distinct identity for the southern churchyard within the wider area and includes a central staircase approaching the main Church entrance with an accessible ramp incorporated into the design, ambient lighting, new railings and repositioned Grade II listed gate, seating and new tree, shrub and herbaceous planting.
